9 April 1746: The Duke of Cumberland’s army marched from Oldmeldrum to Banff, with the people of Turriff coming out to greet Cumberland as he passed through. At Banff, they linked up with Brigadier John Mordaunt’s brigade, and Cumberland had the army line up in a field outside the town where he “ordered that every Man should have a Gill of Brandy, to revive him after his long Day’s March”.1
