Duke of Cumberland

8 April 1746: After receiving reports that the level of the River Spey had subsided, Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland ordered his army to move out from Aberdeen and began the march north towards Inverness. Cumberland “walked most of the way with them on foot, generally using one of the soldiers Tenttrees for a staff”. The army would be supported by Commodore Thomas Smith’s warships and supply vessels offshore.
