19 February 1746: Colonel John William O’Sullivan reconnoitred the defences of Inverness Castle/Fort George which was held by Major George Grant. Grant’s garrison consisted of two Independent Highland Companies and one company of regular troops from Guise’s 6th regiment. James Drummond, Duke of Perth took command of the siege and summoned Grant to surrender.

19 February 1746: From Elgin, Lord George Murray sent orders to William Drummond, Viscount Strathallan instructing him to take the Perthshire Horse to Caddell (Cawdor) where he was to establish his headquarters and then patrol the roads to Inverness and along the River Nairn.

19 February 1746: One company of the Argyllshire Militia was sent to reinforce Fort William ahead of an expected Jacobite descent on Lochaber and an attack against the fort. The Jacobites had stepped up harassing fire on warships and supply vessels sailing through the Corran Narrows to Fort William.
