11 March

Queen Anne

11 March 1708: With a French fleet carrying James Francis Edward Stuart sailing for Scotland, Queen Anne vetoed the Scottish Militia Bill. Anne withheld royal assent on the advice of her ministers for fear that the proposed militia would be disloyal and could possibly join a Jacobite rising. It is the last occasion on which the royal veto has been used.
